What Have I Learned ?

Introduction

I always liked music, playing it as well as listening to it. The styles of music that I prefer are old soul, blues and jazz. In fact I like old music because I grew up listening to only old songs that my father showed me. I learned piano for 2 years but I still play today, with a very good level, and I can also play a bit drums. I've started my second year of singing lessons and my singing teacher teaches me guitar also sometimes. In fact I would like to learn how to play a lot of instruments like alto sax, trumpet, accordion,... This is a part of the reason why I took music as option, to learn more about the history of music but also I wanted to be able to write my compositions a complete song and practice my instrumental abilities. If I have the chance, I want to make my way into the world of music later , as a performer not a composer.

Skills

- Pianist ; 2 years of lessons, still playing by myself.

- Guitarist: In the middle of my first year of lessons.

- Singer ; Beginning second year of singing lessons, and I'm a tenor.

- Composer ; I did compose some songs, sometimes only melodies for piano and sometimes songs piano + voice but I haven't written all of them.

- Music student ; Beginning my 9th year of music lessons at the European School of Uccle *

During all these years, I have learned a lot of things, some that I liked and some that I did not like.

Here are the topics that I have seen :

Cuban Music: I really liked this topic because first of all, Cuba is a place very interesting historically. But the techniques and the instruments used in this type of music are also very attractive to me. I also liked Mambo but I didn't knew it has some shared characteristics with the Dañzon for example.. Listening to cuban music and learning all its characteristics and different styles was for me a real pleasure.

Klezmer Music: This topic is one of my favorite, because I love improvisation and the rythm in this type of music is so catchy! We want to dance and jump everywhere as soon as we hear the sound of the clarinet. And again, there is a very big historical background to this music which makes it even more important to learn.

EDM: In EDM, there are some styles that I totally disliked and others which were great. I already knew Drum And Bass, it's one of the styles I liked. But trance, and house weren't that attractive to me. An other thing that I already knew was sampling, I already learned about this one years ago and it was very interesting.

Ground Bass: This topic was interesting because even though I listen to Ray Charles since my childhood I had never noticed that the bass was repeating itself... And once we learned about the ground bass and its features we unconsciously hear it in every song that uses it.
